Custom Frame Mount 2" Receiver Hitch Kit, wiring and Hitch Light

Frame Mount 2" Receiver Hitch Kit
2002.06.12

This integrated hitch receiver tucks under the rear bumper and attaches to the frame cross member. After installation the modification looks like a factory add-on. I purchased this from Tone Monday (RIP) and it was a relatively easy mod - had to pull off the rear bumper cover (which was probably the hardest part of the mod due to the placement of the side bolts, under the rear fender covers - you pry under with a ratchet to get those off). Once everything is clear hold up the hitch and mark your holes (mine came with holes and nuts/bolts) or you can weld it directly to the cross member.

I used a somewhat generic lighting kit - you run the wires to the two taillights. If I were to do this again, instead of doing something integrated I would just keep a pigtail in the back and let the rear door close on it, as over time the constant exposure to the elements makes the wiring brittle (I've replaced the harness once over the years). Even with the split wiring tubing covering the wire, over time things need to be replaced.

I found a locking pin that fits under there (even more important once the rear skid plate is added and room is even tighter) and added this 3rd brake light insert (few bucks at Harbor Freight) to make things tidy. I've towed a very heavy trailer and load with this setup and everything works well, except for breaking. The first time with a heavy load I skid into an intersection, thereafter taking more time on approaches to full stop.
