Isuzu VehiCROSS
We're not making any promises with this vehicle, which recently went on sale in Japan, but at the New York auto show unveiling of the Isuzu VehiCROSS, Isuzu's North American executives hinted strongly that the vehicle could come here if public reaction was positive. New Yorkers gave it the thumbs up, so we just might see this life-size Tonka toy plying U.S. roads come fall '98. But first Isuzu will have to make more of them. Only 2000 are being built this year, and most have already been sold. The VehiCROSS sells in Japan for about $25,000, and there are no options. Riding on the chassis of a two-door Trooper, the VehiCROSS is powered by a modified version of the Trooper's 3.2-liter DOHC V-6 coupled to an automatic transmission. Power goes to the wheels via a Torque-On-Demand system, which sends all the torque to the rear wheels but automatically adjusts up to a 50/50 front/rear split. Rear vision is obscured by the spare tire, which resides within the side-hinged tailgate, but to compensate, a rear-view camera projects onto a five-inch screen on the dash.
